Rocking Bassinette Hints and Tips

The word bassinet comes from the French for “tired arms need a break.” Not really, but that’s what my crazy great aunt used to say. A bassinet is your baby’s home when they are not in your arms. A rocking bassinet is a wonder to behold.

Rocking bassinets allow you that much needed break from holding baby the rest of the waking day and night. The rocking motion helps sooth baby and like most bassinets, provide a nice and safe little cocoon for you little one.

Bassinets come in all different shapes, sizes and colors to suit nearly any nursery décor. There are two different types of rocking bassinets for you to choose from; battery operated and manual bassinets. Obviously the prices for the two types vary considerably. Both have their pluses and minuses believe it or not.

Battery powered bassinets are nice because your attention is not always required to keep it moving. These models will sometimes even vibrate and offer a heating pad. They’re more comfortable than my $2,000 bed! The downside to these time saver, Cadillac model is that some make noise. Not all babies enjoy the “r-r-r-r” of an electric motor. Come to think about it, not all parents do either. So doing a “sound check” if possible is a good idea.

The old fashioned non-powered bassinets have the silence advantage which is good for you and baby. That is their biggest advantage over their powered cousins. The downside of course is that this puts you right back to keeping it rocking until baby is good and out. The best news I have for you on that count is that after a few weeks you will probably be able to rock the rocking Bassinet in your sleep.

How to decorate you new bassinet is also a concern. While most store-bought bassinets come with padding and sheets as well as matching blankets, there are other options out there. You can buy new sets to fit your own individual tastes or as backups if there is a spill. The first time you want to lay baby down and realize that everything is in the washer or drier, you’ll thank me for suggesting at least a back up.

Another option to think about are the bells and whistles that can sometimes go with a new rocking bassinet. The mobiles and extra kung-fu action grip vibrating mattresses are great, but realistically unnecessary for the first month or so. Baby really can’t see the mobiles anyway. But the thing about it is you will eventually want them in place anyway because it’s a great distraction and will help them to develop.

A rocking bassinet is something that can be very helpful for you. They can be found online, in the stores and resale shops all over the country. Finding the right one for you shouldn’t be that hard, but they are a must for the parent needing some time to just breath for a bit.
