When our son was just an infant sleeping alone was not an option. Due to some medical problems and mom’s unshakable feeling that something was wrong, it was basinet in the living room, only to be moved to the bedroom at night, or the kitchen. At the time we used an electric rocking bassinet, which was pretty high quality in a lot of ways, but what we needed was a battery operated basinet. Some models and brands will last longer than others, no one really addresses battery life that often in the ads. Having a back up set of batteries is a good idea regardless of claims that might be made by the manufacturer. When it’s 2AM and it’s a choice between rocking all night or running down to the convenience store to spend ½ a paycheck on four D-cells you are the loser. One of the main detractors from every type of basinet has to be the fact that most parents will only use them for a month or two. While this is true some manufacturers have addressed this by making playards and even “First Five Year” basinets which expand out into other things after that basinet stage. Few of these are very portable and even fewer are battery operated. So really it’s still a trade off in the end. One of the beauties of battery operated basinets is simply that they can be reused with multiple children and or sold at a fairly reasonable return on the investment. The much hated electric bassinet we bought 11 years ago is still in a storage unit, so it’s not just baby that gets attached to these things. They seem to outgrow them physically and emotionally after awhile, mom on the other hand holds on a bit tighter. The point is, there are plenty of options associated with bassinets. Whatever your lifestyle and needs a battery operated basinet is as flexible as you need it to be.
